Refuting the Punishment of Rejecters of Islam

Islam propagates the liberty of thought and belief, and so there could not possibly be any death punishment for Muslims who decide to convert to any other religion. The Quran says lucidly that the punishment of rejecting Islam to any other faith is exacted in the Afterlife, not in the earthly life by any ruling or religious authority. In the early Islamic history, no one was killed for having rejected Islam to convert to any other religion, but the ones who were fought by early Muslims were people who had raised their swords against Muslims. No one can deify himself and assume the role of God by questioning people about their faith or lack of faith, as this is left only to God alone in the Afterlife and the Day of Judgment. Apostasy, or rejecting Islam, was punishable by death in last centuries because this was the false edict of ancient religious scholars who wanted to serve the rulers to maintain the ruling system and gain worldly advantages for themselves, but this contradicted the teachings of the Quran and the verified Sunna.
Our loyalty today should be to the Quran and the verified Sunna and not to Salafist thought. Sticking to religious views of ancient scholars led some people to call for exacting the capital punishment for those who rejected Islam to any other religion. This cannot be done in the modern age as it flagrantly violates human rights and clearly contradicts the Quranic verses and the verified Sunna. That is why Salafism should be done without in our contemporary Islamic thought.
